The NewYork-Presbyterian Transplant Institute offers one of the most active and successful heart transplantation programs in the world. Established in 1977, surgeons at the Institute have already performed more heart transplants – over 1700 – than any hospital in the United States. In fact, in 2005 NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center set a new record for the most heart transplants performed during a one-year period – more than any US medical center in the history of heart transplantation. This outstanding and comprehensive transplantation program provides excellence in care that is measured not only in how many patients are successfully transplanted and returned to productive lives, but also in quality of life during the entire transplant process, from evaluation through post-transplant follow-up.

The Institute's internationally renowned transplant surgeons and cardiologists have a long and distinguished history of advancing "standards of care" and the survival rates of our patients. They have accomplished this by using innovative surgical techniques, applying scientific research in immunosuppression (anti-rejection) therapies, and inventing and perfecting life-sustaining cardiac assist devices that prolong life while waiting for an organ to becomeavailable.

The heart transplantation program has earned a reputation for performing many procedures on high-risk patients. Despite this, its survival rates are outstanding - well above the national average and higher than expected for a center that handles patients with the most complicated problems.

Based on a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, the program combines the services of a wide array of professionals who provide care during each stage of the transplantation process. Every member of the transplant team brings a depth and breadth of expertise and experience as well as an unwavering commitment to delivering care to patients that the Institute believes is second to none.
