Transplantation

NewYork-Presbyterian Transplant Institute combines some of the most respected minds and facilities in transplantation. Our capabilities enable us to deliver the highest standard of coordinated and comprehensive care to save lives and enhance quality of life. The Transplant Institute also brings together the research and teaching resources of two Ivy League Medical Schools, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Weill Cornell Medical College.

The size and reputation of the Institute bring an enormous range of patients, including high-risk patients and those who benefit from other procedures prior to or in lieu of transplantation. Our spirit of collaboration and specialization is evident in our high survival rates, the products of a seamless integration of medical and, surgical services, as well as innovative immunosuppressive therapy.

The Institute's heart, liver, lung, kidney (renal), and pancreas transplant programs offer state-of-the-art therapies that can extend and dramatically improve the quality of life for transplant patients. From evaluation to post-operative follow-up, patients receive a seamless integration of multidisciplinary services that deliver the comprehensive and consistent care necessary for their well-being.

Along with excellence in clinical care, the Institute is committed to the ongoing progress of transplantation through rigorous scientific research. Its dedicated teams of surgeons and physicians are responsible for many of the significant advances made over the past several decades in transplant surgery and the maintenance of healthy organs. For example, the Institute has been on the forefront of developing and improving anti-rejection medications (immunosuppressants), minimally invasive surgery for living donors, and the FDA-approved Left Ventricle Assist Device (LVAD) that functions as a bridge to transplantation for those waiting for a new heart.

Organ Donation
Living Donors - A Special Gift
NewYork-Presbyterian Transplant Institute has a very active living donor program, which enables those in need of a kidney or liver transplant to receive a donor kidney or a portion of a donor liver from a relative, spouse or friend. Because of the scarcity of donor organs, living donors are an important part of the care provided by the NewYork-Presbyterian Transplant Institute. No gift can compare to the gift of health.

Good Samaritan
A "Good Samaritan" donor a living donor who chooses to donate an organ anonymously and is unrelated to the recipient. These altruistic acts are important because of the shortage of cadaveric organs.

Cadaveric
Most organs transplanted are donated by the families of people who have been declared "brain dead." These organs, known as cadaveric organs, are in short supply.
